I drifted off a lot, and the more I did it the more I liked it. I walked alone in the bush, hearing the sounds of small creatures and the birds I loved—the birds that went crazy when their lives were threatened. I wanted so very much to be like them, singing beautifully or joining together to warn others of danger, then flying right out of there.

The sounds of the bush held me, somehow. I loved everything about it, and it was here that I came out in the open. I loved fallen leaves and grass beneath my feet. I loved the sky and the promise it held of a world beyond the walls of the house we lived in, especially at night when the moon lit the landscape as if it was showing me the way.

In summer I swam in the creek at the edge of the paddock—its walls like the body of an earth that loved me. That’s where I learned to swim, with Mazza and Dodge and Peter and Nob. We played there, where no one could see us from the road and we could see for miles across the paddock—time enough to cover up if anyone came close. Sometimes the farmer, who owned the cows my brother milked, got close when we were having fun in the water. With a slimy smile, he stood on a rock, looking down, talking stupid—wondering what we were up to. ‘Slippery, is it? Cold? Deep holes. Watch out for them deep holes.’ I made sure that my body stayed beneath the surface until he left.

We lit fires on the smooth pebbles on the bank of the creek and baked potatoes. When we were lucky, we sometimes cooked sausages or warmed up baked beans Dodge and Mazza had brought. We made billy tea and swung the billy around and around like the adults did when we went to the farm to pick small-fruit. Now and then, Ella joined us, but the bush was too rough for her and so was I. She wanted things softer. She hung on to her belief in a loving God. I preferred the man in the moon.
